Reader's Theater: The Story of Ruby Bridges

A part of our month-long honoring of Black History Month, The Story of Ruby Bridges, written by Robert Coles and illustrated by George Ford, made quite an impression. Students were captivated by the book itself, which is written so as to preserve as much factual material as possible, including direct quotes from Ruby Bridges as well as her elementary school teacher. Though they were less taken with the illustrations, this ceased to matter when we moved into reading the book-as-script. Being situated in Louisiana, students were particularly enthused to learn that Bridges still lives in the New Orleans area and continues to speak about her life story and encourage activism.
